The growing challenge of rising long-term care costs and dwindling resources continues to be a focus in the voluntary benefits industry. In response, we’ve seen a larger effort to address caregiving challenges for employees through financial coverage with long-term care benefits. Trustmark, for example, proudly offers three options for care benefits with our hybrid life and care products.

We know that policyholders value these products for the financial protection from long-term care costs, but it’s time we stepped back to take a big picture look at some of the missing pieces to the care puzzle.

Missing piece #1: Ability to address care for loved ones

While life and care products help provide financial protection and peace of mind for the policyholder, these benefits don’t address care challenges faced by employees with current caregiving responsibilities. Employees caring for a loved one such as a parent, in-law, or grandparent, are often left wondering how to handle the care needs of their family today.

Why does this matter to employers? 73 percent of employees are caregivers – that is more than 54 million U.S. employees. By failing to support, attract, and retain these employee caregivers, employers are losing $35 billion each year.1

These employees need support, not just for recruitment and retention purposes, but because it can be near-impossible at times to be an effective employee, parent and adult caregiver all at the same time. We often refer to this as the “sandwich” generation, and the challenges they face require more than just financial support for their own, future care needs.

When it comes to addressing the care crisis, we want to help employees navigate their future care needs while also providing support and resources for employee caregivers in today’s workforce.

Missing piece #2: Caregiving support and resources

Imagine trying to put together a piece of furniture without instructions – you may have all the tools, but no guidance on how to assemble it. That’s what many policyholders experience when it comes to long-term care. They may receive the benefits or the “tools” but are left with no guidance on how to navigate the world of long-term care resources and services. How do you find a care facility? How do you navigate any legal needs? The questions can be daunting and aren’t easy to answer.

Take myself for example. I am considered, especially by friends and family, the resident long-term care expert due my job. So, when it came time to help my wife and her siblings navigate long-term care for my mother-in-law, they turned to me for guidance. The problem is, when it came to care support and resources, I didn’t know where to start either! There’s a sense of, “Okay, we have the financial aspect of the care covered – now what?”

What’s the solution? Cariloop!
